How To Change The Data Source In Power BI?

In this blog, we are going to change the data source of an existing Power BI report. Some of the organizations do not want to expose their actual data to any external environment as well as internal environment. On the other hand, they want their data to tell them the story of their journey. To make this thing smooth, they have developed the concept of types of data source, one is Development Data Source known as “Dev” which store dummy data or sample data and other is Production Data Source known as “Prod” which stores actual data. We use Dev data source to develop the reports and just before deploying the report we need to change the data source. In this blog, we will see how to do it.

In Power BI, there are 3 ways to do it,

  • From Power BI Desktop
  • From Query Editor
  • From Files Option

From all of these 3 you will be redirected to the same window.

Let’s have a look into above 3 options,

From Power BI Desktop: You will find this option under Home ribbon, in the drop-down of Transform Data button.

From Query Editor: You will find this option under Home ribbon.

From File Option: You will find File at the top left of your desktop & under File >> Options & Setting >> Data Source Setting in Power BI Desktop or Power Query Editor.

This is all about the change data source setting option available within Power BI.

Now, let’s look at a scenario. There might be a case where you will find the change data source button is greyed out which means this option is disabled or unavailable.

In this case, import the data from new data source as new table and copy its whole Advance Editor code and paste it in the Advance Editor of your existing or previous table. Before doing this make sure table structure & the transformation applied in both the tables should be same. After this you can delete the new table & data source of your previous table is changed.

Thanks for reading this blog. I hope you will find this helpful.
